Snake Bites

Recently two people have been bitten by snakes in the camps. Initially they were given first aid and something to draw the poison out. They were then  treated with Antivenom intravenously.

The weather in Uganda has been very wet with sustained periods of rain. This has led to grass growing around the camps and snakes moving into these areas from the surrounding sugarcane. There is now a concerted effort to clear the grass near to the houses to try and limit any contact people may inadvertently have with the snake population.

Antiretrovirals (ARVs) for HIV

As we stated in our newsletter last year the withdrawal of aid by the US government has meant we are having to fund the ARVs needed to maintain the health of 78 people in the camps with HIV. We are so grateful for one of our generous supporters agreeing to pay for the new batch of drugs that will be needed after the end of April.

We have become aware recently that the US government have now signed an agreement with Ugandan Health Authority. We are monitoring what this means with regard to providing ARVs and other drugs for the general populace. Our hope is that in a few months time issues will become clearer and drugs may be subsidised including those for malaria and typhoid as well as ARVs.
